“Sometimes you gotta create what you want to be a part of.”
Geri Weitzman
Watch collecting, lately, has drifted. Conversations no longer center on the collector, the story, or the art that goes into watchmaking. Hype, investment culture, and short term thinking has taken over while thoughtful discussion was deemed irrelevant. We heard this everywhere without anyone seeming to question where the avocation had gone so we endeavor to bring it back to where it matters most –
the enthusiast.
Leave out the talking points about resale prices or wait-lists or what’s appreciating in value this week. Tell us more about why a particular piece stops you cold. Why certain dials feel like looking through a window into somewhere else. Why collectors, once you find them, feel like people you’ve known for years.
We build the room for that conversation: curated events, editorial, and a community that finds us the same way collectors find the watches that matter to them, by knowing what they’re looking for and trying something new. We’re not here to tell you what to buy or what it’s worth. We’re here because the avocation is better overall when the people in it actually talk to each other. Our events are private, intentional, and built around depth over headcount. Our members are collectors, enthusiasts, and the curious drawn to craft over clout.
This began in Rochester. Where we go next depends on where the collectors are.
What to Expect:
The Format
Horology Republic events are private, intentional gatherings. Depending on the event, you’ll find a featured presenter, open conversation among collectors, or a swap meet where you might find something new to grace your wrist.
The People
Attendees range from seasoned collectors to people who just bought their first serious piece and want to understand what they’re holding. What they share is genuine curiosity. Past guests have traveled from Buffalo, Syracuse, Saratoga, and beyond. You will meet someone interesting.
The Watches
All references welcome. There’s no dress code for your wrist. Past events have featured presentations from Speake-Marin, Favre-Leuba, and Carl Suchy & Söhne — brands worth knowing that rarely get a room like this. Other evenings have been open format: wear something meaningful, tell its story, explore someone else’s.
The Point
Not investment. Not flex. The focus here is the collector — the worn crown, the scratched bezel, the piece that was there for something. If a watch has a story, it belongs in the conversation.
Staying Informed
Events are announced here first, then on Instagram and to our email list. If you want to know about the next one before it fills, reach out at [email protected] or follow @horologyrepublic on Instagram.
